About the area

Central Highlands Water supplies water to the greater Ballarat region and to numerous other localities from Ballan in the east to Landsborough and Navarre in the north-west and Rokewood in the south, covering an area of 9,275 km2. Water supply systems are spread north and south of the Great Dividing Range.

Water services are provided to roughly 184,000 people via 15 separate water supply systems.

2022-23 overview

Urban deliveries

14,412 ML of urban residential and non-residential deliveries were made in 2022-23, similar to the previous year (15,126 ML in 2021-22).

Wastewater recycled at treatment plants

10% of wastewater was recycled (1,645 ML of 16,069 ML), less than the 15% in 2021-22.

Central Highlands Water operates 15 urban water supply systems, including 5 sourced from surface water, 5 from groundwater and 5 from both. Surface water is sourced from the Avoca, Barwon, Hopkins, Loddon, Moorabool and Werribee basins.

Recycled water

Water recycled at wastewater treatment plants can be used to supplement water available in river basins. Table 2 lists the wastewater treatment plants managed by Central Highlands Water. Water discharged to the environment from treatment plants is included as an inflow to the water balance for each of the river basins.
