About the area

North East Water provides water and sewerage services to 39 towns in north-eastern Victoria.

North East Water supplies water to customers in urban areas sourced via Goulburn-Murray Water, which manages water storage, delivery and drainage systems.

North East Water serves an estimated 117,000 people in an area of roughly 20,000 km2. The area extends from Corryong in the east along the Murray River to Yarrawonga, then south to Benalla and to Bright, Mount Beauty and Dartmouth in the Victorian Alps.

2022-23 overview

Urban deliveries

13,730 ML of urban residential and non-residential deliveries were made in 2021-23, similar to the previous year (13,228 ML).

Wastewater recycled at treatment plants

15% of wastewater was recycled (1,748 ML of 11,953 ML), less than the 22% in 2021-22.

North East Water operates 20 urban water supply systems, including one sourced from both surface water and groundwater. Water is sourced from the Broken, Kiewa, Murray and Ovens basins.

Recycled water

Water recycled at wastewater treatment plants can be used to supplement water available in river basins. Table 2 lists the wastewater treatment plants managed by North East Water. Water discharged to the environment from treatment plants is included as an inflow to the water balance for each of the river basins.
