About the area

  • Lower Murray Water’s area of operation extends along the Murray River from Kerang to the South Australian border, taking in the municipalities of Mildura, Swan Hill and Gannawarra.
  • Lower Murray Water provides urban water and wastewater services, and it supplies river-quality water to domestic and stock users as well as irrigation customers. It also operates subsurface irrigation drainage water collection systems.
  • Lower Murray Water operates 4 irrigation water supply systems, 3 other rural water supply systems and 10 urban water supply systems.

2021-22 overview

Urban deliveries

18,922 ML of urban residential and non-residential deliveries were made in 2021-22, similar to the previous year (19,282 ML in 2020-21).

Rural deliveries

116,518 ML of rural deliveries were made in rural systems in 2021-22, similar to the previous year (119,626 ML in 2020-21).

Wastewater recycled at treatment plants

46% of wastewater was recycled (2,760 ML of 6,029 ML).

Urban systems

Lower Murray Water operates 10 urban water supply systems. Water is sourced from the MurrayExternal Link basins.

Lower Murray Water operates 7 rural supply systems and sources water from the MurrayExternal Link basin.

Recycled water

Water recycled at wastewater treatment plants can be used to supplement water available in river basins. Table 3 below lists the wastewater treatment plants managed by Lower Murray Water. Water discharged to the environment from treatment plants is included as an inflow to the water balance for each of the river basins.

The Essential Services Commission made some changes to recycled water data categories in 2021-22, so we have not included a comparison to 2020-21 in the table below.
